Are stainless steel fasteners magnetic?
While this may seem like a slightly peculiar question, it is asked more often than one would think. Many people make the misconception of thinking that stainless steel is not magnetic. However this is incorrect. There are five different classes of stainless steel and only one of these is non-magnetic. It just so happens, however, that this is the most used type, hence the misconception being formed that stainless steel in general is non-magnetic.
Can I weld a high strength anchoring bolt or fastener?
The general rule of thumb with regards to this question is that the welding of high strength bolts is not allowed nor advised. During the manufacturing of these fasteners, a specific heating process is used to reach the strength of each bolt. When being reheated, this compromises the structure of the bolt, hence why it is not recommended.
Can a rod with a welded nut be substituted for a bolt with a forged head?
In plain terms, no, it cannot. Each has been developed for specific purposes and this is why they should not be viewed as interchangeable. The rod with the nut often breaks at a much lower strength than a headed bolt, making it a less than perfect stand in for its welded nut counterpart.
